News from the Principal

Greetings to the Hazen Community!

As we begin to bring another great school year to a close, I would like to pause and express heartfelt appreciation and a big thank-you to the Hazen community for your undying support from budget to basketball and for choosing Hazen for your children’s education as well as for assisting us with our Vision 2020. We are proud to announce that for the 4th consecutive year, we have made AYP as well as being one of the best high schools in America as honored by the US World and News Report for the past three consecutive years. Hazen is, indeed, a Rural Model School!

Additional accolades go out to, Alan Therrien, Grade 11, who presented his research at a recent symposium. Alan collected data over the past year that was a result of his participation in the Vermont Streams Project led by the University of Vermont and Saint Michael’s College. Alan used G.I. S. technology (global information system) to map land use and to gather high-quality data on several watersheds within the Lamoille River watershed. He created a poster that outlines “The Relationship between Land Use and Phosphorus Loading which is on display by the Wall of Excellence. Alan also worked with Mr. Jay Modry, Science Teacher at Hazen. Ultimately, these data are used in combination with many existing data sets to understand how the watershed works and to find solutions to the pollution in our waterways. Projects such as Alan’s support the 21st Century Curriculum and the School Board Ends. Congratulations to Alan and Mr. Modry on this tremendous research!

To bring the year to a close, final exams will be administered from June 14 – June 17. Since we encountered another snow day on April 28, the last day for students will be Thursday, June 17 with an early dismissal at 12:30 PM. (Lunch will be served.) The 8th grade graduation will be held on that same day (June 17) at 6:30 PM in the Hazen gymnasium. Additionally, our seniors will graduate on Saturday, June 19 at 10:00 AM in the gymnasium as well.

I would like to take this opportunity to wish a fond farewell to two of our staff members. Jessica Wells, Teacher of Physical/Earth Science, and Keith Carrig, Teacher of Grade 7 Mathematics will be leaving Hazen. We wish both of them good luck in their future endeavors! Have a safe and relaxing summer! Hazen rocks!

Sincerely,

Elaine F. Laine, Ph.D.
