Hazen Earns Silver Medal…

There are more than 18,000 public high schools in the United States and only 505 schools nationwide earned a silver or gold medal this year.  As of May 16, 2008, U.S. News and World Report magazine has found Hazen Union School to be among these superior schools!

U.S. News and World Report magazine uses data from a school’s performance on state tests, information on how well each school's disadvantaged students did, and whether the school was successful in providing college-level coursework.  In other words, schools have to provide a good education across their entire student body, not just for some students.

News from the Principal

Holiday Greetings to the Hazen Union Community!

I would like to thank everyone who participated in our parent/teacher conferences on November 13.  These conferences are an important component in your child’s (children’s) education and we appreciate your support in our endeavor to provide the best education possible!

I would like to welcome two new long-term substitutes at the middle school level who will be substituting for Ms. Agata Bal (Grade 8: Social Studies) and Ms. Angela Bauer (Grade 7: Language Arts) as they take their maternity leave of absence. Mr. Michael Dailey will be substituting for Ms. Bal and joined our staff in mid-November; Ms. Sarah Keener will be joining our staff in mid-December and will be substituting for Ms. Bauer.

We continue to train our students to be leaders with the goal of having a school that respects diversity and the many facets of it through the program called A World of Difference (AWOD). Our goal is to become self-sustaining and to have students who were recently trained, to train new students next year.  Ultimately, we hope to have trained students at all grade levels to keep Hazen’s Standards of Excellence strong and always visible. On November 18, a team of our AWOD students reviewed the data from the Asset Survey, students in grades 8, 10, and 12 took last month, at an Asset Retreat in Greensboro, also attended by Craftsbury Academy. Students and adults (Ms. Bal, Ms. Davis, Ms. Donlon, and I) reviewed the data and created an action plan to promote standards of excellence within Hazen’s school climate. This leadership activity proved to be a beneficial activity promoting student voice and leadership at Hazen.
